Green and Orange Health and Wellness Blog Banner

If you didn’t know already that the book Eleanor and Park is being turned into a movie. This book has been brought up many times by both the Asian and Black community about being blatantly racist and one of the reasons is the title. Park isn’t an Asian first name but a last name. There is an entire twitter thread that will explain more that you may or may not have seen but you can find it HERE.

Anyways, why don’t we get into this blog post?

Anna K: A Love Story by Jenny Lee ( HALF- KOREAN CHARACTERS/ OWN VOICE-AUTHOR IS KOREAN AMERICAN, BLACK CHARACTERS, THAI CHARACTERS, JEWISH CHARACTERS, ANXIETY AND PANIC ATTACKS, DEPRESSION, GAY AND LESBIAN SIDE CHARACTERS REPRESENTATION)

45043369

Description According to Goodreads, “Every happy teenage girl is the same, while every unhappy teenage girl is miserable in her own special way.

Meet Anna K. At seventeen, she is at the top of Manhattan and Greenwich society (even if she prefers the company of her horses and Newfoundland dogs); she has the perfect (if perfectly boring) boyfriend, Alexander W.; and she has always made her Korean-American father proud (even if he can be a little controlling). Meanwhile, Anna’s brother, Steven, and his girlfriend, Lolly, are trying to weather a sexting scandal; Lolly’s little sister, Kimmie, is struggling to recalibrate to normal life after an injury derails her ice dancing career; and Steven’s best friend, Dustin, is madly (and one-sidedly) in love with Kimmie.

As her friends struggle with the pitfalls of ordinary teenage life, Anna always seems to be able to sail gracefully above it all. That is…until the night she meets Alexia “Count” Vronsky at Grand Central. A notorious playboy who has bounced around boarding schools and who lives for his own pleasure, Alexia is everything Anna is not. But he has never been in love until he meets Anna, and maybe she hasn’t, either. As Alexia and Anna are pulled irresistibly together, she has to decide how much of her life she is willing to let go for the chance to be with him. And when a shocking revelation threatens to shatter their relationship, she is forced to question if she has ever known herself at all.

Dazzlingly opulent and emotionally riveting, Anna K.: A Love Story is a brilliant reimagining of Leo Tolstoy’s timeless love story, Anna Karenina―but above all, it is a novel about the dizzying, glorious, heart-stopping experience of first love and first heartbreak.”

so this book is being talked about being turned into a movie which I would be so excited for! plus i have heard that this is a Anna Karenina retelling with a Gossip Girl vibe! which I think is one of the coolest things! and there are so many good reviews on this book from so many people that i personally trust that i just now that this is a book that i need to get. also it’s apart of a series and the next book is coming out next year according to goodreads.

Shine by Jessica Jung (OWN VOICE REP-KOREAN AMERICAN)

50855956

Description according to Goodreads, “Crazy Rich Asians meets Gossip Girl by way of Jenny Han in this knock-out debut about a Korean American teen who is thrust into the competitive, technicolor world of K-pop, from Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of one of the most influential K-pop girl groups of all time, Girls Generation.

What would you give for a chance to live your dreams?

For seventeen-year-old Korean American Rachel Kim, the answer is almost everything. Six years ago, she was recruited by DB Entertainment—one of Seoul’s largest K-pop labels, known for churning out some of the world’s most popular stars. The rules are simple: Train 24/7. Be perfect. Don’t date. Easy right?

Not so much. As the dark scandals of an industry bent on controlling and commodifying beautiful girls begin to bubble up, Rachel wonders if she’s strong enough to be a winner, or if she’ll end up crushed… Especially when she begins to develop feelings for K-pop star and DB golden boy Jason Lee. It’s not just that he’s charming, sexy, and ridiculously talented. He’s also the first person who really understands how badly she wants her star to rise.

Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Korea’s most famous girl group, Girls Generation, takes us inside the luxe, hyper-color world of K-pop, where the stakes are high, but for one girl, the cost of success—and love—might be even higher. It’s time for the world to see: this is what it takes to SHINE.”

this book hasn’t even came out yet but it is a book that i am going to be preordering as soon as possible. from the looks of it has a gossip girl vibe which i am totally down for. plus this is a book about k-pop from a k-pop superstar perspective. why else wouldn’t you want to read it?!?!?

I’ll Be The One by Lyla Lee (BISEXUAL, PLUS SIZE AND OWN VOICE KOREAN REP)

53098416

Description according to Goodreads, “The world of K-Pop has never met a star like this. Debut author Lyla Lee delivers a deliciously fun, thoughtful rom-com celebrating confidence and body positivity—perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Julie Murphy.

Skye Shin has heard it all. Fat girls shouldn’t dance. Wear bright colors. Shouldn’t call attention to themselves. But Skye dreams of joining the glittering world of K-Pop, and to do that, she’s about to break all the rules that society, the media, and even her own mother, have set for girls like her.

She’ll challenge thousands of other performers in an internationally televised competition looking for the next K-pop star, and she’ll do it better than anyone else.

When Skye nails her audition, she’s immediately swept into a whirlwind of countless practices, shocking performances, and the drama that comes with reality TV. What she doesn’t count on are the highly fat-phobic beauty standards of the Korean pop entertainment industry, her sudden media fame and scrutiny, or the sparks that soon fly with her fellow competitor, Henry Cho.

But Skye has her sights on becoming the world’s first plus-sized K-pop star, and that means winning the competition—without losing herself.”

TW: emotional abuse , fatphobia , homophobia

okay, so we have a bisexual, plus size main character who’s biggest dream is to become a k-pop star and THEN SHE ACTUALLY IS ON THE WAY TO BECOMING A K-POP STAR? THAT IS SO FREAKING COOL AND AMAZING AND I WANT THIS BOOK IN MY HANDS NOW SO I COULD READ IT! but guess what???? it just was released so I CAN BUY IT!!!!

The Perfect Escape by Suzanne Park (OWN VOICE REP- KOREAN / AMERICAN)

50883357._SX318_SY475_

Description according to Goodreads, “Nate Jae-Woo Kim wants to be rich. When one of his classmates offers Nate a ridiculous amount of money to commit grade fraud, he knows that taking the windfall would help support his prideful Korean family, but is compromising his integrity worth it?

Luck comes in the form of Kate Anderson, Nate’s colleague at the zombie-themed escape room where he works. She approaches Nate with a plan: a local tech company is hosting a weekend-long survivalist competition with a huge cash prize. It could solve all of Nate’s problems, and Kate needs the money too.

If the two of them team up, Nate has a true shot at winning the grand prize. But the real challenge? Making through the weekend with his heart intact…”

okay! so i have always been kinda trash for the zombie plot line. well whenever there is talk about zombies i am hooked, whether they are real or not, or its a themed room. so that for sure made this a hook, link and sinker for me. but them having to escape an escape room and try and wind some money sounds like a dream come true and i cannot wait to see how this goes!

The Silence of Bones by June Hur (OWN VOICE REP – KOREAN/ CANADIAN)

44280973

1800, Joseon (Korea). But in a land where silence and obedience are valued above all else, curiosity can be deadly.

June Hur’s elegant and haunting debut The Silence of Bones is a bloody tale perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco and Renée Ahdieh.”

Trigger Warnings for: death, murder, loss of loved ones, mention of dying of starvation, mentions of suicide, being branded, sexism, classism, injured animals and animal death, torture and imprisonment, physical and verbal abuse, slavery, PTSD.

i have been trying to find a good thriller or mystery and this totally seems like the one that will fit for me. this book is still kinda a recent release as it was only released on april of this year. i have also seen so so so many amazing reviews on this book that i am just in awe of this book at this moment if i am being 100% honest.

I Believe In A Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo (OWN VOICE REP – KOREAN/ AMERICAN)

31145133

Description according to Goodreads, “Desi Lee believes anything is possible if you have a plan. That’s how she became student body president. Varsity soccer star. And it’s how she’ll get into Stanford. But—she’s never had a boyfriend. In fact, she’s a disaster in romance, a clumsy, stammering humiliation magnet whose botched attempts at flirting have become legendary with her friends. So when the hottest human specimen to have ever lived walks into her life one day, Desi decides to tackle her flirting failures with the same zest she’s applied to everything else in her life. She finds guidance in the Korean dramas her father has been obsessively watching for years—where the hapless heroine always seems to end up in the arms of her true love by episode ten. It’s a simple formula, and Desi is a quick study. Armed with her “K Drama Steps to True Love,” Desi goes after the moody, elusive artist Luca Drakos—and boat rescues, love triangles, and staged car crashes ensue. But when the fun and games turn to true feels, Desi finds out that real love is about way more than just drama.”

if you don’t know already this is kinda based on a k-drama, and for readers like me who really haven’t been introduced to k-dramas she does an AMAZING job on explaining it to the readers. this is definitely a contemporary that you will enjoy if you haven’t read it already!

Wicked Fox by Kat Cho (OWN VOICE REP – KOREAN / AMERICAN)

Description according to Goodreads, “A fresh and addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul.

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret–she’s a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

42133479._SX318_

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead–her gumiho soul–in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl–he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He’s drawn to her anyway.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon’s.”

THIS IS A PART OF A SERIES TO BEGIN WITH AND ITS ALSO BASED OFF OF KOREAN FOLKTALES IN A FANTASY YET URBAN AREA. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AND LOOKING AND LOOKING FOR AN URBAN FANTASY WITH A SIDE OF ROMANCE AND THIS APPEARS TO BE JUST RIGHT!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!! I LITERALLY JUST ORDERED IT!!
