“Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?”

I don’t even know how the author did it but you feel like you are personally the character being swooned and falling in love with the other main character. We have Thais and Atticus as are main characters. In the beginning of the book we were waiting for their paths to cross and then once you get a little further into it you see how they interact and how their relationship can or will form to be. I love how you see these characters almost working against the word inside the book. One element I really enjoyed and I think you may to also is that while you are learning about them in the present you are also learning about their pasts especially Atticus. Whereas Thais is fighting against a male dominated world which many women have to do daily.

It was a little long but it was well worth it. The book is around 600 pages but you are able to get to know the characters, the plot line, how the characters and the plot line combine in unison, how the characters relationships happen and can just get the full effect of the book compared to it being split up within several books. Plus I mean who likes waiting for the next book when you just read one of the best books in awhile. You know?

One of the best parts of this book was how you see how the author connects this dystopian, post-apocalyptic book to what is happening in our own world today. You are able to see how evil people can be and you get that feeling of losing faith in them but then there is always that one moment that shows you that we or the characters in the book are able to human kindness and reel you back into the book. Which is a very heartbreaking yet beautiful thing.

While this book was a little over the top it kind of needed to be at least in my opinion. I highly suggest reading this book if you are looking for a good read to get back into reading or if you love a dystopian romance.
